Why clean pool filter?

Filters are an essential part of maintaining a healthy, sanitary pool. They are designed to remove unwanted dirt, deposits, calcium and oils. Unfortunately, filters are not yet able to clean themselves. This means that someone needs to physically remove and clean the media in your filtration system..

Your filter is one of the main components to keeping your swimming pool clean. And knowing how to clean a pool filter is an essential part of basic pool maintenance.. As long as you have the right equipment and enough time, cleaning your underground or above ground pool filter is a breeze. Here’s our DIY guide to cleaning all types of pool filters.

But if you’re not sure what type of filtration system you have, check out our pool filters guide. It also depends on the filter brand you have.. For example, if you have a Hayward D, E. filters, you’re probably dealing with filter fingers instead of grids that you find in a Pentair filter.

Just make sure you have the right pool equipment on hand for your type of filter and then take some time to make sure it’s running properly. A dirty filter makes for a dirty pool. You should clean your pool filter at least once a month. A good indication that your filter needs cleaning is if the pressure gauge shows 10 psi above normal operating level..

But sometimes your filter needs to be thoroughly cleaned.. We recommend that you thoroughly clean your filter at least once a year, depending on what type of filter you have.

This is an easy to clean filter type as you can simply pull out, clean and replace the pool filter cartridge. You need to take a few steps to make sure it’s done right. When you have all the supplies, take some time to clean the pool filter.

The process can even extend overnight depending on how dirty the filter cartridge is. turn off the pool pump first. If you have a timer make sure you remove anything that triggers the timer and turn the pump back on. You don’t want the pump to turn on again when you clean the filter cartridge.

Remove air from the system for your own safety. Slowly turn the relief valve (usually on top of the filter) to remove excess air from the system. Remove the clamps (or other locking mechanisms) that hold the filter together. If you’re not sure how to open it, read the user manual.

remove the top of the filter. Then gently remove the cartridge and set it aside. Inspect it for damage and wear. If you find cracks or cracks, or if you’ve passed the point where cleaning is effective, it’s time to buy a new filter cartridge to replace.

If the cartridge is dirty, use a filter cartridge cleaner. If it’s been a while since you’ve cleaned the cartridge filter, it may be covered with algae, calcium deposits, sunscreen, iron, and other contaminants you don’t want in your pool. In this case, soak the cartridge overnight in a filter cleaning solution. You can use the same filter cartridge cleaner.

Use a 5 gallon bucket and make sure the cartridge is completely covered with water and cleaning solution. Alternatively, dilute one part muriate acid to 20 parts water in a 5 gallon bucket. Place the filters in the bucket and leave to soak overnight.. Check O-ring on filter tank.

If it’s in good condition, lightly apply some lubricant to keep it that way. If it has rotted dry or appears worn, replace. Rinse the cartridge thoroughly with water before reinserting it into the tank.. Put the cartridge back into the filter and secure it in place.

Replace the top filter cover and close the clamps. Turn the system back on and open the relief valve to release excess air in the system.. Keep the valve open until a steady stream of water comes out of the valve. Check the pressure gauge to make sure it is within the normal filter pressure range.

If the pounds per square inch (PSI) is off, you may have reassembled the filter incorrectly or something else is wrong with the system. Troubleshoot the pool filter system to identify the problem and. you can backwash the sand filter what you need to do if it hits 10 psi above normal operating level. It may also be time to clean the filter if you notice cloudy pool water.

But at least once a year you need to dry clean your sand filter. If you need more help with backwashing your filter, read our full backwash guide here. Turn off the pump and turn the valve to “filter”. Remove the pump strainer cover and our sand filter cleaner into the strainer basket.

Turn the pump on for about 15 seconds, just long enough to transport the cleaner from the pump to the filter. Turn off the pump and leave it off for at least 8 hours or overnight. If you don’t already have a sand filter, consider investing in one. The time you save cleaning is time you can spend cleaning your pool.

you can dry clean a D, E. filter or you can backwash a D, E. Aside from these indicators, it’s a good idea to clean D, E. Filter at least once a month.

Open the filter tank and remove the filter distributor and take out any grids or fingers. If the manifold is heavily soiled, you should soak it overnight in a solution of muriate acid.. Put on safety goggles and acid resistant gloves. We also recommend that you wear long sleeves, pants and closed-toe shoes.

Dilute one part muriate acid to 20 parts water in a large plastic trash can with a lid large enough to hold the acid solution and filter manifold. Place the manifold in the trash can and make sure it is completely covered with the diluted solution. Used to lower alkalinity and pH levels in your pool water. Once the entire filter manifold is clean, rinse the tank with the garden hose and put it back into the filter tank. Replace the clamps (or other locking mechanisms) that hold the filter together. Mix the appropriate amount of D, E powder with enough water to make a slurry that is a thin, creamy solution. backwash and cleaning filter media D, E. Keeping your filter clean will also make it run longer and more efficiently, saving you money, energy and time. The longer you keep your filter in perfect working order, the longer you can wait for it to be replaced and the more you can focus on enjoying your pool.

A pressure washer is too powerful and damages your filters. It is best to soak your filters in a filter cleaning solution (specially designed for pools) for at least 3 hours and up to 8 hours (overnight). If you take good care of your pool cartridge filters by cleaning them regularly, they can last 2-3 years. If you have a sand filter, the sand inside will last about 3-5 years.

If your cartridge filter is covered with algae, soak the cartridge in a filter cleaning solution overnight.
